XV International Conference on Crystal Chemistry of Intermetallic Compounds

On September 25-27, 2023, the XV International Conference on Crystal Chemistry of Intermetallic Compounds was held in a remote format at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. The purpose of this conference series is to present and discuss new results of the synthesis, crystal structure and properties of intermetallic and related compounds, solid-state chemistry and physics, materials science, as well as to exchange scientific information, expand cooperation. The conference was co-organized by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Western Scientific Centre of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and the Ukrainian Crystallographic Committee.

Plenary lectures were delivered by leading scientists in the field of crystal chemistry, including: Rached Ben Hassen (University of Tunis El Manar, Tunisia), Svilen Bobev (University of Delaware, Newark, USA), Thomas Fässler (Technical University of Munich, Germany), Riccardo Freccero (University of Genoa, Italy), Antonio Pereira Gonçalves (University of Lisbon, Portugal), Yuri Grin (Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids, Dresden, Germany), Ladislav Havela (Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic), Dariusz Kaczorowski (Institute of Low Temperature and Structure Research, Wrocław, Poland), Pietro Manfrinetti (University of Genoa, Italy), Yaroslav Mudryk (Ames National Laboratory, Iowa State University, USA), Silke Paschen (Vienna University of Technology, Austria), Mathieu Pasturel (University of Rennes, France), Caroline Röhr (Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg, Germany), Eteri Svanidze (Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids, Dresden, Germany), Sophie Tencé (University of Bordeaux, France).

In addition, 30 oral and 69 poster presentations were made, distributed into scientific sections dedicated to phase diagrams, crystal structures, physical properties, crystallochemical features of compounds, and structural databases.

In total, 134 participants from scientific centers of 13 countries: Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland, Tunisia, USA, and Ukraine presented new results on the synthesis, crystal structure, properties and systematization of inorganic compounds and discussed current problems of modern crystal chemistry. If we take into account all co-authors, the number of countries reaches 20 (Australia, Argentina, Denmark, Israel, China, Slovakia, Japan). Ukraine was represented by scientists from Lviv, Kyiv, Odesa, Uzhgorod National Universities, Ukrainian State University of Chemical Technology (Dnipro), Volyn National University (Lutsk), National Forestry University of Ukraine (Lviv), National University “Lviv Polytechnic”, as well as several institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine: Institutes of General and Inorganic Chemistry (Kyiv), Metal Physics (Kyiv), and Physics and Mechanics (Lviv).

During the conference, the memories of two outstanding scientists in the field of crystal chemistry and materials science, Professor Wojciech Suski (1936-2022) and Professor Vitalij Pecharsky (1954-2022), were honored. The conference program also included a virtual tour of Ukraine, Lviv and the University, and a video concert for conference participants.

In spite of the constraints imposed by the remote mode, the XV International Conference on Crystal Chemistry of Intermetallic Compounds was a success and showed a high scientific level.
