XIV International Conference on Crystal Chemistry of Intermetallic Compounds

On September 22-26, 2019, the XIV International Conference on Crystal Chemistry of Intermetallic Compounds was held at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. The conference was co-organized by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Western Scientific Centre of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and the Ukrainian Crystallographic Committee, and sponsored by the Lviv City Council (Ukraine), International Centre for Diffraction Data (Pennsylvania, USA), Material Phases Data System (Vitznau, Switzerland), and the Scientific-Consulting Company “Structure-Properties” (Lviv, Ukraine).

The opening of the conference took place in the Assembly Hall of the University, and the next two days the work continued in the nearby Bank Hotel. 140 participants from 20 countries: Austria, Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovak Republic, Switzerland, Sweden, Tajikistan, Tunisia, USA, Japan, and Ukraine, attended the conference. Ukraine was represented by scientists from the National Universities of Chernivtsi, Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, and Uzhgorod, Eastern European National University, Lviv Polytechnic National University, National Forestry University of Ukraine, as well as several institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine: Institutes of General and Inorganic Chemistry, Metal Physics, Physics and Mechanics, Problems of Materials Science, and Superhard Materials.

Leading scientists in crystal chemistry of intermetallic compounds gave 14 plenary lectures: Vincent Fournée (University of Lorraine, Nancy, France), Daniel Fruchart (Néel Institute, Grenoble, France), Mauro Giovannini (University of Genoa, Italy), Ladislav Havela (Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic), Oliver Janka (University of Münster, Germany), Dirk Johrendt (Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany), Libin Liu (Central South University, Changsha, China), Mathieu Pasturel (University of Rennes 1, France), Yuriy Plevachuk (Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Ukraine), Pavlo Solokha (University of Genoa, Italy), Pierre Villars (Material Phases Data System, Vitznau, Switzerland), Yibin Xu (National Institute for Materials Science, Tsukuba, Japan), Peter Zavalij (University of Maryland, College Park, USA). The program also included 19 shorter oral and 104 poster presentations covering phase diagrams, crystal structures, physical properties, crystal chemical features, databases and software. Awards for the best oral presentations were given to Valérie Paul-Boncour (University of Paris-Est, Thiais, France) and Julia-Maria Hübner (Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids, Dresden, Germany), and prices for the best poster presentations in the four categories were delivered to Gregory Gerstein (Leibniz University Hannover, Germany), Nastasia Klymentiy (Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Ukraine), Yurii Prots (Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids, Dresden, Germany), and Nazar Zaremba (Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Ukraine).

Like the previous editions, the XIV International Conference on Crystal Chemistry of Intermetallic Compounds was a success. The conference showed a high scientific level and many aspects of solid-state chemistry and physics, materials science, as well as the role of crystal chemistry in the development of intermetallic functional materials, were presented. Reports of the contributions were published in the form of conference abstracts and also as proceedings in the present issue of Chemistry of Metals and Alloys.
