XII International Conference on Crystal Chemistry of Intermetallic Compounds

On September 22-26, 2013, the Department of Inorganic Chemistry of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv organized the XII edition of the International Conference on Crystal Chemistry of Intermetallic Compounds. The conference was co-organized by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Western Scientific Center, and the Ukrainian Crystallographic Committee. It was further sponsored by the International Center for Diffraction Data (ICDD, USA), Materials Phases Data System (MPDS, Switzerland), and SCC “Structure-Properties” (Ukraine). The opening session was held in the auditorium of the main building of the University, whereas the remaining scientific sessions took place in the nearby House of Scientists. The aim of the conference was to present and discuss new results on synthesis, crystal structures and properties of intermetallic and related compounds, exchange information and promote collaboration between scientists of different origins. In total 190 scientists from 24 countries attended the conference: Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovak Republic, Spain, Switzerland, Tajikistan, The Netherlands, Tunisia, USA, and Ukraine. Ukraine was represented by scientists from all of the main centers active in the field of intermetallic compounds, and by a large number of young scientists, postgraduate and undergraduate students of the Department of Inorganic Chemistry of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, who also actively participated in ensuring the smooth functioning of the conference. The social program proposed a tour of the old city of Lviv, visits to museums, galleries and concerts. The opening day included a special session dedicated to the memory of Professor Evgen Gladyshevskii, founder of the School of Crystal Chemistry of Intermetallic Compounds in Lviv, who passed away in 2012. The conference boasted the following list of leading scientists, who had accepted to give a key lecture: Prof. Evgeny Antipov (Russia), Prof. Ramon Burriel (Spain), Prof. Richard Dronskowski (Germany), Prof. Thomas Fässler (Germany), Prof. Yaroslav Filinchuk (Belgium), Prof. Yuri Grin (Germany), Prof. Ladislav Havela (Czech Republic), Prof. Rüdiger Kniep (Germany), Prof. Vitalij Pecharsky (USA), Prof. António Pereira Gonçalves (Portugal), Prof. Nataliya Skryabina (Russia), Prof. Jean-Claude Tedenac (France), and Dr Pierre Villars (Switzerland). In addition, 21 shorter oral and 125 poster presentations were made, classified into the following topics: phase diagrams, crystal structures, physical properties, crystal chemical peculiarities, and databases and crystallographic software. Proceedings of the XII International Conference on Crystal Chemistry of Intermetallic Compounds were published in the journal Chemistry of Metals and Alloys (Vol. 6, Is. 3/4, 2013).
